Up The Blue!

Time to get the wallpaper out.

I packed Spud Bud off to his brother in Lancaster yesterday – having first insisted he pack up his room, then pack his own suitcase – and today I start decorating.

The last time I decorated Spud’s room he thought Thomas the Tank Engine was the height of interior decoration sophistication.  Fortunately, he moved into his brother’s room before train curtains became an issue.

Tory Boy opted for a Japanese theme when I decorated his room; Spud has never been keen on it and I promised to give it a makeover while he’s away.

I calculate the whole thing will cost me a pound: I have one box of wallpaper paste left from last time; but I’ll need to buy another.  I have plain blue paper from Freegle; one plain white and government-decorators-expensive roll from Tory Boy’s former workplace (he had permission; we’re scavengers, not thieves); and many, many two-thirds-empty tins of various shades of white paint.  Spud lives and breathes Manchester City: it will be like he’s sleeping in their boardroom.

I have been doing this makeover for several years now.  He has a blue canvas wardrobe (Freegle), almost matching blue curtains (Freegle), a blue rug (charity shop), and a blue light bed throw (stolen from ours one hot summer night).  The paper and paint will complete the look.

As a result, I won’t be around to comment much on your blogs over the next week and I might not get to reply to everyone commenting here.  Please don’t take it personally.  I will still post daily (hooray for the schedule button!) and visit you as much as I can.

Don’t worry – blogging is like breathing and eating to me. I’ll fit it in somehow 🙂

When Mother papered the parlour, you couldn’t see her for paste:
dabbing it here, dabbing it there, paste and paper ev-er-y-where
Father got stuck to the ceiling, the kids were stuck to the floor.
You never saw such a blooming family so stuck up before.

My grandad used to sing this at Christmas, only it should be When Father papered etc.

    Have a lovely time.

I remember that song from my childhood. Now it will be in my head all day 🙂

  3. Pseu July 23, 2011 at 09:44 #

Well you have now shamed me into action. I shall have to get out the sewing machine and do a couple of repair jobs.

Have fun papering. Cycloman usually goes out while I paper.

I, too, shall be blue with any significant reduction of my daily Bud.

    • Saffron Road July 23, 2011 at 11:35 #

Definately a different kind of “Bud”. Luv the song, first time hearing … don’t like wallpaper though {:o)

      • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:03 #

I don’t like wallpaper much, either, but it’s here and the paint isn’t, so… 🙂

    • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:02 #

A significant reduction: I must use that when I go on a diet 🙂

  5. gigihawaii July 23, 2011 at 11:57 #

Have fun decorating. I admire your energy!

    • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:04 #

Doesn’t feel like energy at the moment… 🙂

I will be waiting for some pics of the new ‘blue’ room when it’s finished. Good luck with the papering Tilly!

We need to redecorate my daughter’s room, too… getting through her stuff is a task in and of itself, though. Have fun with your project!

    • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:07 #

Thanks. It’s a lot easier with him away. The hard part will be sorting his stuff to put back: where do I put the junk he doesn’t want to keep? He wants to do a boot sale but we’ll have to store it until the Hub feels well enough to take us. Starting to wish I hadn’t bothered now 🙂

it’s ok that you aren’t around as long as you post pictures of the inexpensive make over…i’ve never heard of freegle and am going to check it out after this! enjoy your make-over and i hope your son does too!

    • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:09 #

Freegle is a Freecycle splinter group; there is also Realcycle. I must update my links 🙂

  9. Inspiration to Dream July 23, 2011 at 14:04 #

You put all of us to shame who know we should be doing something like this and aren’t. Best of fun and luck with the task ahead

I am afraid of wallpaper! lol
I hope it turns out wonderful for you!!! :0)

    • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:13 #

Thanks! It will, in all probability, be a bit of a cock-up 🙂

  11. callmecate July 23, 2011 at 14:21 #

How exciting to come home to a new room! I love how creative and resourceful you are – makeovers that don’t cost a lot are my favorite kind!

    Thanks for playing 6WS!

  12. kateshrewsday July 23, 2011 at 14:37 #

Good luck, Tilly. It sounds the very best kind of adventure: thrifty, but timely.

  13. Tinman July 23, 2011 at 15:21 #

You’ve shamed me into doing something around the house myself – oh wait, it’s sunny in the back garden, forget it.

    • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:17 #

Mrs Tin must be grateful every day for a man like you 🙂

  14. Kathe W. July 23, 2011 at 15:32 #

yow! Oh for before and after photos? Don’t get too wrapped up in your work hahah!

    • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:20 #

😀 Before photos…I always forget something!

  15. Linda July 23, 2011 at 16:02 #

Oh yes…we will definitely want pictures of the completed project!

    Happy Saturday!

Have fun Tilly and have a wonderful Saturday 🙂

    • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:30 #

Thanks. It was a busy one but a couple of episodes of Little House on the Prairie is a good way to relax. 🙂

      • We're Jumpin' July 24, 2011 at 01:33 #

I agree 🙂 I haven’t watch those in a very long time, sad I know

  17. Becca July 23, 2011 at 18:15 #

What a fun project you are taking on! Post pictures when you’re done 🙂

  18. Karen S. July 23, 2011 at 18:16 #

Sounds like all work and no fun and sticky fingers as well! Have fun anyway!

    • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:34 #

      Thanks, I will 🙂

I’m sorry I can’t return your visit; there’s no blog address.

  19. earlybird July 23, 2011 at 19:24 #

Can’t believe you’re decorating again. I’ve only just got over the last burst…

It all sounds incredibly well planned. Good luck! (I know how much you enjoy painting and wall papering…) 🙂

    • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:39 #

The boy deserves it; he got his best-ever report 🙂

  20. kiwidutch July 23, 2011 at 19:31 #

Ah Renovations, we are up to our necks in them here too. (well, to be more honest about it, Himself is, I just have to maneuver the sticks past random bits of extra furniture stashed in the living room and the hall)
Purely by chance, Kiwi Daughter (who has no football affiliation) has also chosen light blue for her new room colour too, but with a pink stripe that goes all the way around the middle.
Looks to me like gift wrap LOL but she loves it so … go for it gal!
    Happy painting and decorating!!!

    • Tilly Bud July 23, 2011 at 21:41 #

It’s good for them to express themselves in their bedrooms. Spud couldn’t care; apart from approving the paper to make sure it was manly enough, he has no preference at all. He never puts up posters and declutters as much as he can.

  21. eof737 July 24, 2011 at 13:53 #

We will miss you, so do stop in and say hello when you can… and take some before and after photos! 🙂

  22. Kathy July 27, 2011 at 19:56 #

Good luck with the decorating — My projects will have to wait until summer is over — not that we’ve had much summer. . .

    • Tilly Bud July 29, 2011 at 17:43 #

You sure that’s Canada and not England? 🙂
