Rugby. I Love It.

Saw Sale Sharks lose last night

Walking the dogs yesterday afternoon, we bumped into our tame rugby player, who offered us free tickets for last night’s pre-season friendly against Edinburgh.  Five free tickets, because we are minus one first-born but plus one niece and plus one nephew.  Our rugby player is a nice guy.

I don’t mind that they lost: the thunnk of many men crashing into each other is so thrilling that it doesn’t matter who wins; I’m too excited to care.

It has taken me almost thirty years to learn the basic rules of football; most of it by osmosis – when you’re married to a man who buys products based on who is sponsoring his team at the time, you watch, read and hear a lot about soccer.  In comparison, however, footballers are huge wimps with their diving and calls for bookings; give me a pitch punch-up any time, like last night’s.  Rugby is a man’s game.

My love of rugby has taken me by surprise: despite the Hub’s passion for it (third only to football and athletics; and pipping beach volleyball – women’s – to the post), I never got excited about it, even when he made me watch South Africa win the 1995 World Cup.  Spud took it up in high school, and I actually disliked it intensely, especially when he was knocked out.

I would go to his matches and cover my eyes.  I reached the point of watching with my back to the pitch.  That was when I discovered the big boys’ rugby – strapping eighteen-year olds, thunnking and crashing into each other…

…I love rugby.

Sorry my love, a few corrections. Football (not soccer), Rugby and then athletics are my preferences followed by every other sport including NFL American Football but excluding boring golf. Watching rugby may give you a thrill but playing it gives you a real adrenalin buzz.

Aha! A rugby gal eh! Remind me not to tackle with you…..

Rugby or football does not hold much interest for me but Neville is a Chelsea supporter ( even when they play badly) so I do try to appear interested and so far it has succeeded.

    Have a great weekend,

I’m with ya, Tilly. Have always thought Rugby was a ‘real’ game as opposed to certain others… but how you weren’t seduced when watching the ‘boks in 1995 I don’t know. They were magic – I can remember that game in detail even now.

Sports are just not my cup of tea! Except I do enjoy a quiet golf game on tv now and then with the hubby. It is good to take a nap by! Ha!

    Happy SWS

Not really mine, either; but watching live sport where it’s happening is more fun than you’d think.

I’m still laughing on the photo and comment by granny1947, she would love my mother’s reply, (my mother being a huge soccer fan and not so much football fan…some might say the biggest difference, on the funny side, less touching, and falling on top of each other for all that rolling around!

I have never seen a rugby game, so don’t know what I am missing. However, I learned to love American football via osmosis. Hubby would get so enthusiastic while watching the NFL on TV that I couldn’t help but be curious and follow along. So much for marriage, huh? lol.

I never really watched a game, I think it would be better to watch in person than on tv 🙂 Hope you are having a lovely Saturday!

This post made me giggle. I have learned over the many years to love footbal. I do enjoy it more in person than on TV> I had a dad that has a true love of the sport and played semi pro A brother that loves it and husband that is cockoo over it. A sister who is nutter for it then the whole lots. So needless to say I have learned and do enjoy only on my terms.

I’m not a sports fan, but rate rugby over footie because the players are true gents. The BBC can even have mics on the pitch and no bleep machine.

I agree – rugby is much better to watch than football. I can see that football players are quite obviously very skillful in the way they control the ball, but there’s just not enough action on the pitch compared to a rugby match!

I played it until I was about 14, then I came back to school at the end of the summer and discovered everyone else my age had grown by about four inches and I hadn’t.
I played two more games feeling like I was being hit by a truck, then gave it up.
Still watched Ireland playing France today – unfortunately.

See I just don’t understand rugby at all, nor do I have any desire to (sorry!). My boys are sports freaks so I learnt all about Australian rules football and soccer just so I could understand what was happening. I guess I could really confuse the conversation here in regard to the difference between football and soccer.
