I read an article today about renting Christmas trees. At first I was cynical about the idea, thinking it another gimmick for the lazy; but it’s actually rather good. The intention is to reduce the number of cut trees thrown away in January:
The hire scheme provides people with a pruned and potted Christmas tree for the festive period, before it is collected in the new year and replanted to be rented out the following Christmas. Once the tree grows too big for the home it will be planted out in sites including schools and nursing homes, where it will absorb a tonne of carbon.
As someone who has never, for her whole married life, been allowed a real tree, because the Hub doesn’t believe in cutting down living things for human pleasure, not even the nagging wife’s, it is a very attractive idea. Ditto for saving the planet.
What about you? Do you like the idea? If you celebrate Christmas, do you have a fresh or fake tree? Are there cons as well as pros to this?
