Thanks to Sidey for this one.
I was walking in a cemetery this morning and saw a bloke hiding behind a gravestone. “Morning,” I said.
“No” he replied, “just having a pee.”

[…] or was it yesterday, I didn’t “get” a joke, this is until I re-read the joke in an English accent. (Tilly, this is no criticism of you, only […]

I am a little fat. I like food; what can I say? I have dull hair: mousey. I donāt wear much make-up and have no need of a dressing table. If I look like a bag lady, I chose my own clothes. If I look nice, the Hub picked them for me. Despite all this, I am a little vain. This photograph is from 2003. I had to go back that far to find one of me that I liked. But I donāt really care: my husband still thinks Iām beautiful and if he doesnāt, he loves me enough to lie about it. Iām lucky. I have two boys. They never lie to me. Still, you can't have everything.
I would love to hear from you!

… Took a minute, that joke doesn’t work with my accent. If you want to exclude me further, find a joke based on “curtain” and “certain” being homophones.
‘Cos they aren’t.

So how do you pronounce ‘morning’ and ‘mourning’?
Or was it ‘pee’ and ‘pea’?

The vowels are different. In morning the vowel is o in mourning it s ou.
So morning it is like in ‘loss’ and in mourning it is in like … The o in mow.

But both words are pronounced the same. They are homophones. The “or” and the “our” are both pronounced as in the word “or” or the word “tore”. If you check a dictionary, you will see that they are pronounced exactly the same.

In England. Not here in Scotland. The Dictionaries are “English” dictionaries. I was just saying that because I am Scottish it took two readings are they are not homophones here š

Oh I see!! Well that makes sense then. I’m in America, and try as I might I couldn’t see how they wouldn’t sound the same! lol I was really puzzled and a bit worried for you! š By the way, I enjoyed your post about it. Will probably be back to visit your blog again soon. Thanks for setting me straight.
