Newsflash: It Rains In Wales

19 Aug

Q: How do you fit two adults, two dogs, three teenage boys, one girl child, a tent, sundry camping equipment including a carpet, TV, and a fridge into a little 1400 Citroen?

A: Don’t be daft!  It’s not a Mary Poppins’ Tardis.  You don’t; you get one teenage boy’s Dad to bring him along, with half your gear.  Thanks, Dennis.

About three weeks ago the Hub said, ‘The weather is supposed to improve; let’s go camping.  Let’s go camping and take the niece and nephew and Spud’s friend. Let’s go camping in North Wales because it’s only an hour’s drive from here and I can just about manage that with my ME.  Let’s go camping and forget our last experience of three days in a tent in October in a gale.  Let’s go camping because the Olympics will be over and the football season won’t start until a week later and I’ll be bored.  Let’s go camping.’

I’m pretty intuitive, and I began to suspect that the Hub wanted to go camping.

He looked online, found a nice camp site about four miles each way from Abergele and Rhyl, and booked four nights, five days for six people and two dogs, reasonably priced.

Come last Monday morning, we loaded up the cars and went off on a summer holiday.  We had no trouble finding the camp site; we were given a good spot – sheltered, near the water hole.  The tent went up in fifteen minutes with all those bodies and because we knew how to do it this time.  The gazebo and wind breaker went up even faster.

We sat; we rested; the children explored and played.  We braaied sausages and hamburgers for dinner.  We congratulated ourselves on our choice of week, weather-wise.

The heavens opened.  We scuttled inside the tent and made the best of it.

The heavens closed, leaving behind a rainbow.  The children, dogs and I went for a walk.  The children played football and badminton.

Night came.  We watched a movie and went to bed, having first scoured the wonderful clear sky for the tail end of the Perseid meteor shower.  Hub and Spud were fortunate enough to see a couple.  Me, nothing.  The one time in fifteen years I’ve had a clear sky to witness it, and I was in the toilet.

The clear sky departed.  It rained all night.

Welcome to Wales.

Fabulous rainbow! I don’t think you can say you have really been on a camping holiday unless it has poured with rain – every single one I’ve been on in this country (and we went on lots of family camping holidays when I was growing up) has involved rain at least some of the time. 😉

We did this when I was a kid. I remember only the packing & the unpacking. And the campfires.

Great rainbow photo, Tilly! And camping in the rain sounds fun, but I hope you have some of the other weather as well!

Well, the rain is not much fun when you’re camping, but that rainbow was glorious! I’m glad you all made the best of it!

Giggle…Tilly, Tilly, Tilly…Newsflash: It Rains In Wales!!! That’s not a newsflash, it always rains in Wales. hehe. Rhyl, 🙂 my Great Aunt Clara’s caravan was at Rhyl we used to drive over Llanberis Pass in the dark because me and my brother were always travel sick in my dad’s red van. NO WINDOWS and two aspie kids, not a good choice of vehicle really was it?! Are you enjoying Jellyfish beach my lovely friend. Love and hugs. Lisa. xx 🙂
Oh and here is a little video I just found for you. So dangerous to drive this in the dark, you can see all the gaps in the wall where cars have gone over the edge.

I’m not surprised about the rain. After all, isn’t Wales in the British Isles after all?

    Oh boy!

Laughingly, I am reminded of those old glass plate photographs of early explorers who trekked through Africa with fine china -some traditions die hard.

Obviously, you and yours have fun and laughs where ever you pitch your tent. You must be rich beyond belief with memories.

We are 🙂 Life is what you make it, and money helps, but doesn’t really matter. Giggling in a wet tent with four kids is one of my happiest times 🙂

I’ve only been camping in N.Wales, once. It poured with rain the first night, and our little tent blew away. 😦 Never again! I don’t think we even had a rainbow to ease the pain. 😉

Love that outdoors life. We camp all the time. Our favorite campsite is the Hilton but the Sheraton also has some good spots.

That rainbow is beautiful! I know that I would have missed the star works because I’m always in the toilet. It sounds that in spite of the rain you and the Hub made sure that everyone had a grand time. You are the strong stoic types, I took notes for if ever I ever go camping, lol.

‘I’m pretty intuitive, and I began to suspect that the Hub wanted to go camping’, my how I envy that infamous female intuition!. 🙂

So this is the ‘more to follow’ eh? Well I’m sure you made the most of it all the same. Your story reminds me of the Welsh comedian Rhod Gilbert joke ‘The bible talks about 40 days and nights of rain, that was the best summer I ever had!’

That’s not camping – that’s luxury living. When you’ve slept under the stars in a bivvy bag, cooked sausages on a fire made with damp sticks, had your hot water bottle freeze inside two sleeping bags, then you can say you’re a camper.

But I’m very glad you had a fun time.

What they say on Ireland .. if you don’t like the weather .. wait 20 min. 4 seasons on one day if your lucky. That’s why it’s so green. *smile

Aah, camping is no different in Wales than it is here. That’s a relief. Sounds like you made the best of it though, and that’s what makes camping so much fun. We didn’t see many metoeors, either and we got up at 3 a.m. to go watch.

I am way late to this party, but will hopefully get back to normal before the weekend. Have you noticed how food always tastes wonderful in the great outdoors? You are off camping, another friend is in a caravan…. I think it is time I had a mini holiday!

What a lovely family time. We were in our trailer this past weekend, and I find it’s a great way to slow down! Maybe too slow, at times, but I like to practice the art of slowing down whenever I can. The rainbow is a lovely shot! It sounds to me like you made the most of close quarters and had a good time! 🙂 Debra
