The Worst Meal Of The Day

25 Aug

Two visitors leave;

two more arrive.

The niece and nephew are being collected today.  They are lovely children and we love having them, but it will be nice not to have to make lunch.

Lunch is the worst meal of the day; I never know what to make.  I’ve already had cereal; I hate sandwiches; toast makes me queasy.  What else is there?

In winter, the Hub and I often have porridge or soup, but it’s too warm for that right now, even with the rain.  Yes, it’s worth offloading two delightful children just so I don’t have to worry about making lunch.

Around the time my young guests leave, two old ones will arrive.  The Hub’s sister and her husband visit us a couple of times a year.  They live on the Isle of Wight.

I guess they’ll be needing some lunch.

Make a big quiche and serve it with salad. Or how about hot dogs? Fruit for pud.

Toast makes you queasy? I would die without it!
Know what you mean though. Mick gets an endless repetition of paninis and bacon butties. I’m no help, as usual. Enjoy your company. The rain’s bouncing here. Did somebody mention Bank Holiday?

How about croissants with ham and cheese, or a green salad with cold chicken? Enjoy your guests, Tilly, and have a great weekend. 🙂

Lunch for visitors ideas: bacon and egg pie + salad, garlic spaghetti pasta with or without ham or bacon + baguette and salad, veggie quiche + salad, taco shells, a little taco mix, salad and white rice … let guests “build their own taco” ….rice salad with onion, peas, broccoli and thin strips of cooked diced chicken breast… pesto, hummus, baguette a few salad bits …

Just a few ideas… you dont need to break the bank either, adding a side salad or home made coleslaw will help to bulk out any meal.’

    Have fun!!!!

I know what you mean about lunch and visitors – you always feel you have to produce something decent. What about cold soup? Or… show them the kitchen and invite them to help themselves?

Lunch is my favourite meal of the day. If you don’t like sandwiches, I have found flavored hummus and pita work well with a cucumber salad.

If I was invited to lunch I would say salad especially potato salad, or beetroot or avocado salad. Add to that either crisp fresh rolls or slices cold meats.

Tell them that you’ve converted to some anti-lunch cult and, while you don’t mind if they partake while visiting, they’re on their own for shopping, prep, & cleanup.

Not much help from here, T.Bud 🙂 ~~ In America I would know what to prepare. First, Mac and Cheese. Second, peanut butter or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Third choice (got to go outside the home for this probably), pizza.
    So not a problem.

French toast with fruit, or put the sandwich filler in a pitta pocket, pancakes & bacon with Maple syrup. Are they staying more than three days?

Looks like lots of people gave you ideas for lunch! Ha! I will just say that I totally understand how it is when trying to feed company. I can never quite decide. I much prefer to take them out to eat!

    Happy Saturday!

I ate fish and chips from one end of England to the other. I love those fresh fish. We had fish for lunch yesterday (scallops and spinach) and fish for lunch today. Fish is good. Dianne

Looks like you have lots of lunch suggestions. I’d probably order pizza. Or whip up some tunafish. Wait. That would be a sandwich. Never mind.

Lunch is tough – I prefer it if I have leftovers from dinner the night before. Don’t have to think about it that way.

I hate lunch. I hate lunch especially in “summer” when I have to make it for the kids. So depressing. They only ever want “a cheese sandwich”. Heave.

Sounds like though, with the numbers of persons coming through the Bud household lately you’d be a lunch making pro by now. We will have to start calling your place the Laughing Housewife Inn. Or you could solve your problem and be the Laughing Housewife Bed and Breakfast, then your company would be prepared to fend for themselves after breakfast.

I don’t really like to cook–regardless of the meal–so I don’t have any good suggestions for you. Besides, I could live on cereal, sandwiches, and toast (notice all a bunch of non-cooking foods). Oh, I’m also quite fond of tacos, very little cooking involved there, and they’re yummy! Whatever you decide, do enjoy your company.

When I have company & don’t want to cook I lay out a buffet with various breads & buns, some deli meats, some cheese, some veggies & a dip & let everyone make whatever they want to eat. You can easily do this more than once since the visitors can choose to make different things each day the buffet is out. Spruce it up the second day with some potato salad or a green salad & everyone is happy!
