Pillow Talk Round 8

You must be sick of my headaches; I know I am.  I looked back over old posts because I have a headache today and I thought I’d re-post instead of thinking around the sore spots to come up with original material but, you know what?  I complain a lot about headaches: I get migraines and stress heads and neck tension and shooting pains and the occasional bump when my head is in the figurative clouds but the actual world.

Today’s headache is a new one that started two days ago.  It is caused by my old pillow, which is now too flat for comfort.  I’ve tried swapping with the many we have in the cupboard but they are too high or too hard or too lumpy.    That’s probably why they are in the cupboard.  I tried using the old pillow and a feather pillow, thinking I’d get some height from the flat pillow and I could shape the feather pillow to suit.  Result: thumping headache from the neck up.

I have a long history with pillows.  As a child, I sometimes slept in my parents’ bed.  I would take their four pillows and build a little wall around and over my head.  Mum and Dad always found me.  I never figured out how.

More than once in my sleep, I have yanked  the Hub’s pillow out from under him and thrown it across the room, frightening the life out of him.  I can only assume that I want to keep him on his toes even when he’s unconscious.

Before we replaced our mattress, I slept with a feather pillow for support, otherwise I woke up in a foetal position with back ache, having rolled into the sagging centre of the bed.

I have a habit of taking up the middle ground in my sleep.  One night the Hub came to bed to find me occupying three-quarters of it, but he gamely tried to get in.  I must have stirred like a dog guarding a bone because he touched my pillow and I distinctly recall the malice with which I snatched my pillow to me and flung myself over onto my other side.  Semi-conscious, I remember lying there needing to go to the toilet but not getting up because I wasn’t letting him get his hands on my pillow.  I can recall how aggressive I felt: poor darling, he could feel it radiating from me.  After what felt like an hour of my bladder impersonating a leaky dam, I suddenly had the answer; it was obvious: I took my pillow to the bathroom with me.  I can’t imagine why I didn’t think of it earlier.

I don’t remember getting back into bed but the Hub tells me he couldn’t sleep because he was shaking with laugher.  He says that at one point I turned over in my sleep but left my pillow there and clasped it to my back with my arm uncomfortably behind me.   Conscious or not, my husband wasn’t getting hold of my pillow.  He won’t want it now, anyway: it’s covered in toilet germs.

Here are some pillow facts from All Night Pillows to help you sleep:

  • 99% of people use a pillow to sleep on, yet 70% of people don’t like their pillow.
  • Most people derive 80% of their sleeping comfort simply by having their necks well supported all night long.
  • Half of women over 30 years old suffer from morning headaches and/or stiff sore necks.

Okay, the people at All Night Pillows are clearly spying on me.  Let’s see what the LA Times has to say about pillows:

  • The concept of the bed pillow is believed to date back to prehistoric times, when a pillow used to be simply a stone, a piece of wood or bundled grass.  I might try that; it can’t be worse than my current pillow.
  • The first pillow was best described by Confucius five centuries before the birth of Christ: “With coarse rice to eat, with water to drink, and my bended arm for a pillow–I have still joy in the midst of these things.”  That Confucius – what a riot he must have been at a sleepover.
  • Early Hollywood filmmakers used pillow fights on screen to stir emotions. The amount of feathers pounded from the casings depicted the degree of conflict.  Hmm.  With that rule, I should be spending half my income on pillows.  Might be cheaper to hire a hit man; at least I’d have the bed to myself.

I will leave you with this parting thought – as odd as you may upon occasion find me; as whiny as I may be about pillows and headaches and husbands; at least I’m not like this guy:

Lee Jin-gyu pillow wedding

From the Metro:

True love can take many forms. In this case, it has taken the form of a Korean man falling in love with, and eventually marrying, a large pillow with a picture of a woman on it

I have to admit, I can see the attraction: bump off that spouse and the only ones to complain are the ducks providing the filling for your next one.  If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it must be a comfy pillow.

Poor achey Tilly. My pillow gets twisted into a corkscrew shape during the night. If they don’t make you sneeze, feather pillows are the best. Do you have an old duvet? You could try folding that up into roughly a pillow shape.

Yes, poor Tilly. Before I write my main comment, I want to say I suffer from headaches too.

I laughed at this piece. Why did I laugh, because you sound like Mrs. Bennett in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ when her youngest daughter elopes with Mr. Wickam. You don’t have any sons running off with loose women do you?

Silly question….have you tried sleeping with NO pillow?

I suffered the same nightly horrors. And then …. about 8 months ago, I found it. The perfect pillow. (insert angel harp music, here). Really and truly, it has made a HUGE difference. I hope you are as lucky to find “the one”.

I share your territorial feeling over your pillow, I have had disputes with my hubby whenever he tries to put any part of his body on my pillow. I laughed at us during the whole post. I hope that you can find a suitable pillow to get rid of your headaches.

Oh, Tilly! I know, I know!
I get some relief by having two regular pillows that I swap or combine at will. I’ve found the constant repetition of one pillow is partly to blame. One of mine is memory foam, and sculpted for the neck. The other is down. Mmm. Each is great solo or combined.

I suffer from migraines, too. I don’t know if my pillow helps, but I love it. It is a special pillow that is a foam pillow that is raised under the neck and then slopes down to the back. It supports the neck quite well. It really helps me sleep. I still occasionally wake with a headache, but not as often as I used to.

Well, this one hits home. I suffer migraines. I sympathize with you, and am so very sorry you go through that. It is a relentless nightmare. I have been having trouble with them lately.
Bill has had neck problems which gave him headaches. His snoring gives me one. Perhaps why the guy married a pillow! I’ll bet she’s quiet!

I am also possessive about my pillow…I have my initials written in black ink so when they go to be cleaned I make sure I get my right pillow back. Also I used to take my top pillow on holiday..and when we went to Dom. Rep a few years ago there was a hurricane and we were diverted to Jamaica…When we left the following morning my pillow got left behind by mistake. I was not a happy bunny! I do hope that your head gets better and stays better soon

Oh, I feel your pain. The search for the perfect pillow that does not have me waking up with a throbbing pain in my head so bad I’d hit anybody else in the head just to feel better…….well, the search goes ever on. Also, I always know when it is going to rain 3 days prior because my head…..it always knows.

It looks like that 70% figure was accurate – so many commenters empathise with my problem. That rain thing is interesting. Have you ever had surgery on your head?

Gee, I haven’t had a headache for years! The last one was a tension headache at the base of my head and neck due to staring at the computer at the office for long periods of time. When I quit my job, my headaches stopped.

Both hubby and I are perfect-pillow-hunters. I have cupboards full of pillows which have proved unsuitable. At the moment, I’m loving my Tempur one. It seems to do the trick.

Thank you, but no. I will intend to read it and I’ll come across it in ten years time and have to stop speaking to you because I’m embarrassed not to have read it in all that time and I’ll be afraid you’ll ask me what I thought of it next time we meet and I can’t lie and I’ll feel so awkward I’ll just die.

Hmm…getting a sense of where my stress headaches come from…

If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it must be a comfy pillow. – Brilliant …. I love my ducks under the head too – I have left everything and just gone for IKEA and followed their advice about what mattresses to buy and same with duvets and I have never slept so well. The best beds I ever slept in is “Hästens” – it’s the Rolls-Roy when it’s about bed .. every inch is hand-made, but it cost too much. A bed and it’s belongings is the most difficult thing to buy.

I too have a cupboard full of pillows since I am awfully hard on pillows (or should I say they are hard on me?). I end up changing my pillows about twice a year it seems or I end up with headaches too. For years I swore by foam slab pillows which kept their shape & support, but then I started getting a lot of neck aches, so about 4 months ago I went to a feather pillow which conforms more to the position I want. Only problem – I’m allergic to feathers & did not realize it was a feather pillow when I bought it. In only a few months it already feels too flat for me so I am using both my pillow & hubby’s pillow in an effort to get some rest without pain. Hubby has been sleeping in his recliner since we moved due to a pinched nerve in his shoulder & back issues.
You should treat your headache with Maltesers – everything is better with Maltesers!

      True, true 🙂

I’m sensing this is a problem for almost everyone. Is it any wonder there’s so much war and violence in the world? None of us are getting a good night’s sleep.

After having the daily pillow fight with my own pillow, I finally bought a foam pillow at IKEA a few years ago. Best purchase I ever made! They have tons of different kinds, small, big, thick, thin, to match your sleeping style. No more neck pain in the morning, and no tossing that pillow around. Foam is the way to go!

I welcome your comments but be warned: I'm menopausal and as likely to snarl as smile. Wine or Maltesers are an acceptable bribe; or a compliment about my youthful looks and cheery disposition will do in a pinch.
