Rain, Rain, Nothing But Rain

22 Dec

The dog is going stir crazy.

IMGP2163

Just the one dog: Toby loves his walks but not in the rain.  He’s a Yorkshire Terrier and terriers believe in sniffing their way around a walk.  You can’t sniff anything in a puddle so what’s the point in going?  If it’s raining, he won’t go out and that’s that.

Unfortunately, it has done nothing but rain for a week.  There were at least two days when we didn’t get out, and on other days we managed ten-minute walks in the hiatus between one lot of clouds moving on and the next lot of clouds rolling in, but it’s not enough for a Squirrel Chaser (First Class) such as Toby.

He’s driving me mad with his incessant nagging.  I have to open the front door every time he starts, letting the rain soak the carpet because the wind is always blowing in this direction.

The problem is, dogs don’t think in the abstract; they live in the now as in:

I want a walk now, I want a walk now, I want a walk now!  Good, she’s putting on my coat, my harness, my lead, her coat, her scarf, her gloves, her shoes, what’s that big stick that opens up?  At last, I’m having my walk at last, at last – I’m not going out in that!  It’s filthy and I can’t smell anything.  Heels in; I like a good tug of war.  Let her get wet if she likes; I’m not that daft.

And then we have to take off the coat, the harness, the lead, the coat, the scarf, the gloves, the shoes.  I’m never sure which one of us is most disgruntled but I know who sulks the most.

Molly is a different kettle of dog:

It’s past September?  No thanks; I’ll walk in April.

Please tell Toby, I don’t blame him, I live over in Newark, Nottinghamshire, it has rained here for days too, I went out on my usual 5mile walk at 5.30 this morning, it was raining again, I was wet through, but it was a good walk.
I hope the weather gets better, firstly so Toby can get his walk and secondly because all my trainers have worn soles and my socks keep getting wet!
    God Bless

Impressive, Wayne. 🙂 Hope it stops raining for you. You must look quite bedraggled when you arrive home.

Thank you, I do look like a distinctly drowned rat.
The walking is something I started a few months ago, one of the daily routines I have since my sobriety, I walk with God every morning, come rain or shine. The rain doesn’t bother me, God told me not to worry about getting wet on my Baptism Day, so I go out in the rain no matter.

Our Barney was a Yorkshire Terrier too and he also HATED the rain. He would go, but spent the whole time giving whoever was walking him accusing looks. And he would do his business almost immediately – he knew he wouldn’t be allowed home until he’d done at least one pooh!

That’s too bad — for both you and your dog. I hate cold, rainy weather myself, which is why I prefer to live in Hawaii. Love sunshine. I visited London for 2 weeks in November 1969 and didn’t like the fog and rain. Everything else was fine!

I have TWO dogs that refuse to go for their walks in the rain. Fortunately, it hardly ever rains much here in south Texas but when it does, it’s a terrible downpour. A monsoon. Then we have to wait for a break in the monsoon for a slight drizzle before the next downpour to go out and they are NOT happy to be going out in the drizzle and mist. Could it be that this is a trait of small dogs? Mine are Japanese Chins (14 pounds each–I don’t know don’t what it is in the English weight system; go figure it out). They are quite fuzzy and thus protected from getting soaked. I don’t know what their problem is. Rain, I suppose.

Here in the Midwest we could use some moisture. I like a nice steady rain…but have almost forgotten what it is like! 🙂

I do remember how silly dogs can be. When we had one, he would scratch to go out, and I would open the back door to let him in the backyard…and it would be snowy, or rainy, or cold…..and he would refuse to go out! Ugh! It was so frustrating! But we loved him, so we put up with him! Ha!

Hope you will have a Merry Christmas!

I see you are still here. I told you those Mayans couldn’t count.

Our dogs bolt back into the house if its raining. Then they go to the other door to see if the weather is different at the back door.

funny….. my dog is exactly the opposite — maybe it’s because she is a beagle? But constantly cleaning up mud! Wish she enjoyed her bath as much as she enjoys the rain…. Have a Merry Christmas Tilly!

Jack and Toby would get along famously and I’m pretty sure that Jack would be fawning over Molly as well. I can see all three of them curled up on the couch waiting for the rainy days to go away.

Awwww..the rain can really put a dampener on things, can’t it? Mac doesn’t mind until the very end of the walk when the rain gets through his wiry little terrier coat to his skin. And then he just becomes miserable, shooting vitriolic glances in my direction because, of course, it’s all my fault.

How would Toby feel about 2 feet of snow? Our neighbours’ dog seems to love it just fine. it’s only snowman he has a problem with — judging by the yellow snow decorating ours. and we don’t have a dog.

Dogs do live in the now and I like your description of how Toby’s mind works!
Our Poppy hates the rain too, and will not put a paw outside in it – but we have to open the door so she can see it for herself, then she reverses back inside the hallway!
I hope it stops raining for a while so you can get Toby out before his stir-crazy feelings get out of hand!

My Yorkie never goes out. I’m afraid she’ll get eaten by a hawk. She uses training pads in the house. Like kitty litter only for a dog. (years ago I put up a YouTube video of her. You can find it if you google “Zoe Shell Game” )

My dogs – a Boxer and Boxer/Stafford-shire Terrier mix – won’t walk in rain or the snow. They will go out in the yard in the rain and the snow, with a good hard *shove* and a backwards glance to let me know how disgruntled they are. Just no walking. No, thank you. No, ma’am.

    Did I mention we live in Ohio and “rain” and “snow” are two/three of our four seasons? Yeah, it works out well. {lol}

At any rate, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Oh and Happy 6WS, too! 🙂
