Now That The Festive Season Is Over…

29 Dec

…I am enjoying the restive season

My middle-aged bones are not what they were.  I could once prepare for Christmas throughout the whole of December, look after a big house and a small family, host as many as twenty-two people for Christmas Dinner and four grandparents for a week, throw in a New Year’s Eve party with guests sleeping in the lounge, bakkie and their own tent in our large garden, manage the cooking, cleaning and washing, and still wear make up and a big smile at the end of it.

Now, five of us for Christmas Dinner and my legs ache, my back creaks, my tired body slept until nine this morning and make up?  Forget it.  The Hub knows what I look like with a naked face.  If he doesn’t like it, he can hobble through the door.

Roll on grandkids, when my sons can start hosting Christmas.

PS That NYE party when guests camped in our garden?  They woke on New Year’s Day to find their tent smothering them.  Our Doberman had chewed through the ropes in the night.

I have. Yesterday I only did a bit of ironing and gave the bathroom the bottoming I was too tired to give it on Christmas Eve 🙂

Today I have caught up with blogging and comments.

My Beloved Sandra’s family, who had come on a 10-day stay, finally vacated yesterday morning. The comparative silence is golden. Now it’s just me and her again…me and her…me and….hey, wait a minute!Happy New Year to you, TB!

I am so beat. I need a restive season. I still have guests for a few more days. After that, nothing will get cleaned or cooked in this house until spring.

We were thinking on the same lines this week, Tilly.
Aren’t you supposed to feed Dobermans?
Happy New Year to you and the family.

It’s too bad your party was not potluck. Did you think to order take out from the Chinese restaurant? Just kidding.

I love the term “restive season”. My daughter and her family went home yesterday and I still haven’t stripped the beds. We just enjoyed the quiet.

Wow some days I sleep in until 7 AM, but rarely. My parrots begin calling to each other at first light. This means I get more sleep in the winter. On the other hand, the dogs sleep most of the day.

Happy New Year to you and yours. Other than a short visit and meal out with my daughter, I am curling up with a cup of Java and a good book. Dianne

I still love Christmas and all there is to do, but I live for those in between days when I have nothing to do.

I take it that your guests have not returned for NYE….I must admit I laughed out loud when I read that…imaging their surprise as they awoke the next morning wondering what you put into those drinks. 🙂 Have a wonderful recovery from the holidays!

I don’t mind all the catering if I have a crowd, but this year since I was on my own, I went on strike. I had plenty of food but nothing festive. AT ALL! I cooked what and when I wanted, and had a very quiet time. In fact I never unlocked my front door for three days! If I am typing here, then I didn’t cause the world to end. Happy New year to you,Tilly, and all your family and and off line.

Great job, Linda and that’s why I don’t like Christmas .. because mums are totally worn out – for only 2 days. But you mums … love Christmas. But it also means that you had a great Christmas. I hope you had a good night’s sleep.

It took me a full week to recover from Thanksgiving with just six of us! For Christmas I took the easy way out and had Prime Rib, baked potato and broccoli. It was easy and everyone liked it! I won’t be doing another Thanksgiving like that again! Wishing you a wonderful restive season and a very Happy New Year!

Or, you might someday retire to a “smallish” place and just contribute part of the Christmas feast at the home of a sibling-host. Soooo much easier and certainly more “restive.” 🙂

I completely understand the after-Christmas exhaustion. But I have a sincere suggestion…you CAN’T refer to yourself as middle-aged. You’re so much younger than I am, and I have only recently admitted to middle-age myself. If you plan to live to be more than 100, and I think that’s a reasonable “goal,” you’ll see that you have some time before you need to admit middle age.

My Happy New Year gift to you! I play games with reality ALL the time! 🙂

Hmm…have to think about this. I don’t mind living to over a 100, so long as I’m not still making Christmas Dinner 🙂

I intend to be like Maggie Smith in her Downton Abbey role when I’m older. I’m working on it now, but I’ll have it perfected by then. I won’t be doing any housework at all!

I welcome your comments but be warned: I'm menopausal and as likely to snarl as smile. Wine or Maltesers are an acceptable bribe; or a compliment about my youthful looks and cheery disposition will do in a pinch.
