Making a room of one’s own
Virginia Woolf said that every writer needs ‘a room of one’s own.’ Until I got married, I had one. Then I was too busy being in love, raising babies, living my life to need one.
In 2003, I started a degree with the Open University and in 2008 I took their Creative Writing course and rediscovered my love of writing.
I have had, since then, the use of the Hub’s computer, but not his desk i.e. I can sit at it to use the computer but not put anything on it; our bed; and 55 note books. That is about to change.
The Hub fixed me up with a laptop over Christmas. Tory Boy came home for ten days and, once he was done being ill, he cleared half of the stuff in his room into the loft, the recycling or the bin. We rearranged the furniture and there is now space for a desk, which Spud is kindly donating because he also got a laptop for Christmas and no longer needs his PC.
Today, I plan to move the desk into what is now the spare room.
I have the best family in the world. And a writing space of my own!
Fabulous! 🙂

You deserve it, Tilly and your writing merits it. I hope you’ll take me on a Skype tour soon – that’s how I’ve kept up to date with Sally’s house renovations and also the state of the snow round about her!

Good idea! The Hub bought that other camera thing before he fixed the one you sent me. I’ll ask him for it.

That is fantastic! However if the Hub is anything like my hubby you will need some room for him in your office space. The Hub has been used to seeing you for all this time and if you are suddenly squirreled away in your private room it might be too much for him to bear. Or perhaps not, either way hooray for Tilly!

Yes, he’s already complaining that he’ll never see me. Men! Never satisfied, are they?

How wonderful! That’s something I really want as well. Right now I use the house computer, which is situated in our guest room, which has no storage space for my writing stuff. I keep hoping for a laptop and a room…
Enjoy!

Be patient and it will happen. Whatever you do, don’t let it be a reason not to write.

I write at a desk top computer that sits on a computer hutch in the living room. No need for a separate room. I managed to write and publish 3 memoirs and numerous newspaper columns there. Best wishes to you, Tilly.

you are the luckiest woman ever!! Oh to have a place where I don’t have to share my creative space with half dressed Barbie’s, Lego pieces and half eaten apples. The dream lives on. Enjoy!

Congratulations, I suppose it’s now possible for all great writers to be staying at Knockinamm Lodge in Scotland … while writing their books. *smile – I think the spare room will be perfect for you and it’s included in the “rent” and close to the kettle.

The reason I was so happy to get a new laptop was so I can sit at a TV table in the living room & watch TV while I’m writing (blog, book) & playing games.

Mmm! I love the smell of books, and I think I can smell a new one coming on! 😉 Ms Woolf did not fare so well, in the end, though, so I would not copy her too much! 🙂

are you redecorating, or just reorganising?
I moved furniture and redecorated the guest room so I could have space, and I’m now using it, though I haven’t finished organising it!
I managed to get a second hand office chair with arms and a two drawer fining cabinet for a bargain price which was marvellous. But I need the hanging files and a grand sort out of old papers, to keep only what’s necessary. One step at a time.

Baby steps, that’s right.
I am just taking one corner; it’s all I need. I plan to use the walls as a notice board.
The desk is not in there yet because there was a hiccup – it is buried under Spud’s stuff. He wanted to clear it himself but he had too much homework on Saturday to get to it. He went out yesterday and I was going to do it but then that thing I told you about happened, so I didn’t.
I am out today but tomorrow – it’s mine!
