Aussie Barbecue Season
After long months of cold and winter, we are finally coming up to summer and BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking as it’s the only type of cooking a real man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved.
When a man volunteers to do the Barbecue, usually on a Saturday, the following chain of events are put into motion:
Barbecue Routine
- The woman buys the food.
- The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.
- The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill, beer in hand.
- Here comes the important part:
- THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.
- The woman goes inside to organise the plates and cutlery.
- The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.
- Important again:
- THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.
- The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces and brings them to the table.
- After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.
- And most important of all:
- Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.
- The man asks the woman how she enjoyed “her night off.” And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there’s just no pleasing some women….
Well there a fine how-you-do…there goes your invitation to my first barbecue of the SoCal season… Well, you can come if you bring the salad.:-) Very cute post.

Only too true. And in this house the man won’t even go near the barbecue! He does other things, though, like making soup and doing the dishes. The irony of the opening words of this post are that in Oz, winter is just starting!

We’ve never had a barbecue. We got a bar b set as a wedding present and it went in the garage. We moved house and it moved to the new garage. We converted the garage into a room and the bar-b went outside. The box disintegrated; the instructions disappeared, the bowl thing bit rusted… So it went in a skip.
Hoping the person that gave us it doesn’t subscribe to The Laughing Housewife.
Meanwhile I wait with a roll and butter, hoping for a burger.

Sounds an awful lot like American barbecue season. Men love grilling the meat–and nothing else. Women do everything else, even cleaning the grill. In Texas, barbecue season goes on forever, with slow barbecue-smoking a favorite amongst men. They take immense pride in their barbecuing skills. There are barbecuing contests, especially at rodeo time in February and in the summer. Mostly men participate. Women clean up.

I’ll bring a salad, a dessert or the wine. Everyone else is welcome to the preparation, cooking and clearing up!

Not completely true in our household…my husband will stand over the BBQ and does his best. After a while of him prodding and poking the meat I am forced to take over out of fear he will destroy the food. He does try, poor guy! LOL!

Hahaha. That sequence of events at the braai is so true, especially the woman coming outside to tell the guy the meat is burning. 😆
