I think I’ve kept you waiting long enough, but be warned: my new room is not for the faint of heart. You see, I have this problem of never letting anything go to waste on account of having little disposable income.
The Hub bought a job lot of matt paint – something like 30 litres for £15, two colours: fuchsia and honeysuckle. I decided the fuchsia was too dark and opted for the honeysuckle.
I needed gloss for the woodwork and I needed a fair bit because I had five pieces of furniture, none of which matched. Aldi had paint on sale, but not much choice. I thought I could mix white and bright yellow and make pastel yellow. There’s a reason I’m not paid to think.
I put on my painting pyjamas, prepped the room, and mixed those suckers. Did you know that white gloss and bright yellow gloss mixed together make bright yellow gloss? Me neither; but they do.
The Hub was ill in bed; I was pyjama-ed up, spent up and raring to go, so I went. I figured that if I didn’t like it, it could act as an undercoat for the time when I could afford to buy pastel yellow gloss. But you know what? I like it. Actually, I love it. It’s, um, bright, but so cheerful.
If you come to stay, you’ll be using this room so you’d better learn to love it, too. But bring a sleeping mask.
I did have one little problem. After emptying a tray of four tubs of honeysuckle, I noticed a few white patches where I’d missed spots. I pulled a tub from the next tray in the shed and daubed over the patches. It was only once it dried that I realised that the contents of tub no. 5 were a slightly different colour – noticeable, but only if the sunlight comes in at a certain angle.
I was bored with painting by this time so, instead of re-doing the whole room, I placed pictures and furniture in strategic positions and voilà! One room painted one colour. Honest.
You’ll see a South African table cloth in this next photo, used as a picture. That’s where the biggest number five daub is. I think the blue breaks up the blinding luminosity rather well (and I already had it in).
The room cost no more than £20 to re-do, if I include the curtains (charity shop: £1.75), lamp shade (charity shop: £1.99) and cushions (car boot sale: 40p).
What do you expect of a woman who once papered a bedroom with stickyback plastic? Class? You haven’t been here long, have you?
The carpet is fourteen years old and has been through two teenage boys so I need a rug until I can replace it. Anyone got an old rug covering their compost heap? You know I’ll give it a good home. But it needs to be a tasteful colour, like orange. I have my standards.
It’s brilliant!

it is er cheery. I suggest shutting the drapes on bright days or you could damage your retinas, but damnall if it doesnt grow on you.
one way to break up the onslaught of color would be to paint doorknobs and handles a slghtly darker shade of the same color (mix a small bit of brown in the regular color, or a dark orange, expertment and see what works) sort of like what you do when you dye fabric, and it might cut the yellow a bit. Just a thought,
The matching baseboard is a nice touch. Ties the whole room together.

I love it! The furniture reminds me of Monet’s kitchen at Giverny. The South African tablecloth is stunning on the wall. I am ready to move in. 😀

Do you have a link to that painting? I don’t know it.
But I quite understand your mistaking my room for great art 😀

I am trying to paste an image of Monet’s actual kitchen.
It won’t go. I googled images of Monet’s kitchen at Giverny
images of monet’s kitchen giverny and it gave me several images of both the kitchen and the dining room right next door. You will love it, I think. The dining room is the one in yellow.

lol You are too funny. Sharing is caring is what the artist would say and yellow needs to be shared with the world just as you and Monet rightly decided. 😀

Wow! It certainly is cheerful! A real converstation starter! I love that you tried to tone it down, couldn’t, then just kept on going…
I’m surprised at how quickly it’s grown on me. (I’m not a fan of yellow or orange). I’d kinda like to see the handles painted black though. What do you think? Or would that be too bumblebee-esk?

Oh yes 😦 But maybe a bright blue…?

Blue could work well 😀 It would tie in with the soft furnishings.
I’d still like the black though. Yellow and black is a good combo.(P.S. What’s wrong with bumblebees? We NEED them don’t you know?!) 😉

I love bumblebees, so long as they stay on their side of the front door and I stay on mine.

Yellow is my fav colour simply because it is the colour of the sun and makes me feel happy…so your new room is a happy room with continental flavour (the blue tablecloth on the wall). I would add that it passes the standard of Tracy Emin and that is saying a lot!
Well done TillyB you are an artist of great taste , but if you go on one of those TV progs like Changing Rooms…please leave me off your list…I am boring Magnolia

Warm and welcoming as it is, it is giving me an eerie flashback to my life as an 80s child, inheriting a room *quite* like this from my sisters who decorated it in the 70s.
I was happy in that room.
🙂
But it was yellow.

Unusual! In the seventies, it was normally brown, purple and red. Or was that just our house? 🙂

Eh… just your house.
I had yellow gloss door and woodwork and the wallpaper was yellow with a pattern involving large bunches of yellow and orange flowers. And the bed had an orange “candlewick”. Is that even a thing? Or was that just my house?

We all had candlewick covers until the advent of the duvet! And nylon duvet covers! Turn over in bed and you electrocuted yourself 🙂

Well, what can I say? My friend once painted her lounge in the same colour. Her grandson exclaimed, “It’s very yellow, Granny!” You could never feel blue in this room, Tilly, except for the SA tablecloth. 😀

I love your new room. Great job. Have you thought about a bamboo rug? Less expensive and easier to clean. Or a mat type rug that lets the cooties fall through. Rugs are a pain for those of us with breathing issues.

Can you explain about the breathing issues? Do rugs trap dust, is that it?

I rather like it. it’s bright and cheerful. I am not a fan of white rooms – or worse, beige. Probably because I grew up in apartments with all white walls and beige carpet that you are not allowed to change. I have a red dining room. I think that sums it up nicely.

Most rugs trap dust mite poop. I pulled most of my rugs out of the house. Only have rugs in two rooms upstairs, a room where I have my exercise equipment and a roll away bed for unfortunate guests, and my bedroom. Both are off limits to pets and slightly used. I run air filtration machines all over my house and take meds for allergies.
As for bamboo..I like it because its a sustainable source…once you plant it you can’t get rid of it. ;~)) These days, mfgs make everything from furniture to clothing from bamboo.

Everytime I come back to this post I like the yellow more and more. It’s extraordinary – I usually can’t stand bright yellow! I’ve revised my idea on the black handles – what I’d really like to see now is the walls painted grey (or at least one wall a darkish grey). Yellow and grey is a fantastic combination.
