Frazzled – the battle with adrenaline

7 Mar

An amusing – and fraught! – read from a dear friend of mine. A terrifying insight into what awaits me…

Nicola Hulme Author

I’ve been so far out of my comfort zone for so long, I’m not sure I know my way back.

In the last 6 months, I’ve been drawn away from the pleasure of writing, to be called upon for public speaking events. Moving away from the private relationship between writer and page into a pubic life of presenting the published book to unknown audiences. It’s uncomfortable. It sounds ungrateful, and sulky, but for those of you, who long for the label of published, let me give you an insight into what is then expected of you.

The book launch itself was a huge party. Surrounded by friends and family I was supported throughout the whole event and I loved every minute. A lot of hard work studying the craft had paid off, and seeing my name of the front cover of a picture book was a dream come true.

Aaahh Linda, please don’t be terrified. I think I need to write a follow up blog than redresses the balance, after the concerns I have inadvertently raised! Let me reassure you that there are an infinite number of positives and such wonderful experiences to be had once published. This is just my private battle with nerves when public speaking and perhaps a lament on how the marketing events pull me away from my writing, by eating into my time. If it was so terrible, I’d stop … and I have absolutely no intention of doing that, so onward and upwards for us both. xxxxx

I’m certain that you shall rise to the occasion…where’s that stiff upper lip attitude. Cheers!

Lol, makes you want to rush right out and do this, for sure. But bear in mind a children’s book is a totally different audience, and you might find yours more calming. I think you would enjoy it, even with all the attendant hoo hah that goes with it.

Not sure I could handle it, but then I don’t think there’s much danger there…=)

whatever comes, Tilly, enjoy the hell out of it. You’ve surely earned it.

Hello there! I just wanted to tell you that for some strange reason, your Scream photo took over part of my blog page running all the way across the page from the sidebar. I’m going to try reinstalling you to see if it happens again. So weird. I’ve never seen this happen before.

I have no reservations that you will handle this with your usual aplomb.

I welcome your comments but be warned: I'm menopausal and as likely to snarl as smile. Wine or Maltesers are an acceptable bribe; or a compliment about my youthful looks and cheery disposition will do in a pinch.
