Mum

9 Jan

Today is the third anniversary of Mum’s death.  What a contrast the weather is to last year, when we couldn’t go to the cemetery because the snow was so thick – glorious sunshine today, though a freezing wind made coats a necessity.

Mum is a teenager in this photo.  Her teeth were lovely then but she got gum disease in her thirties and had them all out.  I always considered that a warning – choose between your smile or your fix.  Also, smoking gives you lots of wrinkles: Spud wouldn’t kiss Mum until he was nine because he was scared of her wrinkly face.  It still makes me laugh.

Mum was not a great housewife compared to me, and I am not a great housewife so that will give you an idea of how bad she was.  In fairness, she had a demanding full-time job – and even had three jobs at one point – so she had more of an excuse than I do; but once she acquired the habit of not cleaning, it never left her, even when she retired.

My Nan called in after church one Sunday morning when I was about eleven, and Mum hadn’t started to clean up, so Nan got stuck in to the kitchen.  Once she had finished washing the dirty cups on the side, she made tea in them.  Fortunately she left straight after, because the tea went down the drain – two of the cups Nan washed were used to hold Mum and Dad’s false teeth.

three years already… incredible… did you find any daffodils? Do you know how old she was in the photo? She looks more than a teenager (but then what would I know, never having met her)

I know; I don’t know who told me she was a teenager in this, but I have other pics of her in her teens and she does look older. Maybe she’s 19 years, 364 days old 🙂

I did find daffodils; how sweet of you to remember. I took her some tulips as well but they were limp so I had to prop them up with the daffs. Should look lovely when they all open.

Ugh! Terrible! Reminds me of my mother, who left the housecleaning to her 5 young kids, who, of course, did not know how to dust.

    May she rest in peace.

Your mum had the same Hollywood eyebrows that my mum had when she was young. She looked gorgeous as did your mum. What happened to glamour?

It gave way to grunge when our lazy children discovered they could avoid their own ironing and be fashionable at the same time.

I hope you like the story: I was thinking of you when I wrote it.

lol!! Just realised how that sounds – not because of the false teeth or the messy house; because you asked for more stories about my Mum and I’ve been scratching my head for months, trying to remember something. Mum had quite a sad life but I don’t want to share those stories here (the ones I know of, anyway).

        xx

A good idea to write about your mam on her anniversary – perhaps then all of her anniversaries until you have the beginnings of ‘life story’ that you children will inherit.

How many of us have a recall further than three generations? All before that is so dark.

Not me, that’s for sure; I’ve barely got it for two.

From that lovely photo, you must ressemble her a lot. Anniversaries are good memory jerkers.
