Two news items caught my eye yesterday.
This one in the Johannesburg Star:
In an emotional appeal, ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema has urged hundreds of supporters to vote for the ruling party in the coming local government elections to prevent an ailing Nelson Mandela’s condition from deteriorating.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a more cynical attempt to obtain votes. I can’t imagine Mr Mandela likes what is being done in his name.
This one in the Stockport Express:
A new disability assessment centre has come under fire – because of poor disabled access. Atos House will be used to assess around 9,000 people claiming incapacity benefits in Stockport. But there are no blue badge spaces outside as the centre is on a paved, pedestrianised route. This leaves visitors with a walk of at least 200 yards to get to the Deanery Way building – a journey one disability group claims will be ‘impossible’ for some.
So those being assessed to see if they are fit to work despite being disabled, will not be able to make their appointments because there is no disabled access, and will therefore be classed as fit for work in absentia.
You couldn’t make it up.
Sometimes you read something and all you can do is shake your head!!!

Bureaucracy at it’s worst.
The disabled are damned if they do and damned if they don’t, someone needs to make a law that such nonsense becomes illegal.
Even sporting a temporary injury I an having difficulty to do 100 meters right now, I completely understand the absurdity of requiring people to be somewhere where access is effectively denied.
Reminds me of the sign that is labeled “wheelchair access” but the arrow points down a flight of stairs.
The same four letter word to that applies here: FAIL.
