I love WordPress; I do. Remember that if you ever hear it was found buried in a blue recycling bin left abandoned off the M6.
What’s with WordPress at the moment? I just had to approve my own comments on my own blog. I get why other bloggers might hesitate to approve me – banal and anodyne, anyone? I’m not good at small talk – but I think I’m mostly okay and I can’t say there’s ever been a moment when I have disapproved of myself, except for once in my twenties when I made a deliberately mean comment to a friend and I have since always been ashamed of it.
Another complaint: the wonderful new notification system (which could be more wonderful still if it didn’t go only up to nine) now tells me when I’ve made a comment on my blog…talk about overegging the pudding. It goes like this:
- I post.
- You comment.
- WordPress tells me you commented: in my dashboard, my inbox and through my notifications.
- I reply to your comment.
- I have to approve my own comment.
- Not knowing I have both commented and approved my comment, I receive notification that I have left a comment on my blog.
- My head explodes.
I feel guilty for complaining: poor Viv is having trouble receiving comments at all; and her commenters are feeling as frustrated as if they are trying to leave a comment on Letterdash.
Is WordPress really trying to compete with the most inefficient comment system known to blogger?
Answers on a postcard, please. It will get here faster.
Are you sure you didn’t mean “the most inefficient comment system known AS BLOGGER”?

I typed that first and then I remembered Letterdash – you have to register to be allowed to comment.

I am disappointed the “caption” spot for photos has disappeared. altho
since it has I’ve managed…just like the style it had.

I just re-read your post again (not that I didn’t read it properly to begin with!) and cannot stop laughing at the incisive way you put things. I also wrote a slightly negative post re WP but I wasn’t as funny as you – alas!

I have to admit there are things about the commenting, viewing and like ratings systems that boggle the mind. Thank you for bringing this opinion forward in a delightful and humorous way.

Has anyone organized any kind of formal contact with WP over this? It may be time to pull out the power we used on SOPA, and apply it here. Well, maybe not — that’s pretty extreme. But if your blogger readers flood WP Help, for instance, maybe they’ll notice and do something!

Well I poured my trickle into the flood – three times!

Me, too, but who knows if they’ll listen?

Do you want a serious comment? Nah. But you’ll get one anyway. I had that problem a while back. I think it’s when schizophrenic people have at least two blogs – you (if not in double figures – me), and although you use the same name, you are actually logged into the one blog and not the other. ie one is your ‘main blog’ and you are logged in with the url of the other. Or something like that. Anyway I sorted it. You too, can sort it. It did my head in for a while too.
More to the point, I want to know why new posts come up on my wp feed with an amazing regularity of hit and miss,

I was on my other blog yesterday so I think you are right. No problems today.

you are right TillyB, everything you say is true but reading about it in print just makes my head spin.
Maybe the confusion is to stop information getting to the little green men in Space..if that is the case then they are doing a very good job!

Why am I always the last to find out there is something wrong? Perhaps I didn’t notice, I’m not very observant and if it relates to anything techy, then I simply accept and wait for whatever to resolve itself. It seems that everyone is now aware and will take care of it so I can rest easier. WordPress is temperamental at times and I’m never sure if they are tweaking it or if it’s a glitch in the system. I don’t know.

If you are the last to find out, there’s probably nothing wrong with your blog. Close your eyes, cover your ears, and pretend you didn’t read this post.

Tilly, I have had no problems with my WP blog, so don’t know what you are dealing with. Maybe, you clicked that box that says “Notify me of follow-up comments via email”?

This made me giggle. Have you ever not wanted to approve your own comment? 🙂

Sadly not: you readers are so complimentary – despite the threat of a Malteser ban – that I now think everything I write is wonderful.
I’d blame you but my ego is now so big, it must be my fault.

A dew days ago I had to ‘approve’ all the comments you made….
I’ve found that if I’m logged in and all the buttons show at the bottom of the comment box (wordpress, face book etc) I have notification of my own comments. If I then click on the wordpress button that stops notification of my own comments. This sometimes gets jinxed if I log on on the office computer and then later log on on the laptop.
This may tie in with what roughseas said.

I’d try that, if I understood what you just said.

Perhaps improvements are on the go. IT people are like that. They hit on something that works, all by accident-like, and then they can’t wait to improve it until it stops working.

I also haven’t noticed any problems with commenting either, although I have noticed that almost everyone else is having a bit of a mare.
However, I have been having a bit of a problem with everything else computer-related, so this may account for me not noticing…

I think I may have a problem with my comments now. When I type a longish comment, the box doesn’t expand, so all I can see is the tops of the letters I’m typing. Not very good when you need to see what is being written (which, ahem, I don’t need to…)

Tilly, others are having the same issues. I just finished unspamming a a WP friends comments and having to approve it. She has been emailing support as all her comments to various blogs dissapear into the spam filters. I have another WP blog which is also a website, and I find having to approve my own comments. Hope your issues get resolved! 😉

You have to love Letterdash where any spammer can login and advertise on your blog for free!
The limited WP notification is a bit annoying I think it should only list replies to comments you have made on other blogs because the other notifications go to your email in any case.
The new milestone notifications are only visable to you so other bloggers are not aware of the goals you achieve that is a bit disappointing when you want to boast a little 😦

I agree about the comment replies; much better system.
I haven’t had any milestone notifications yet. What did I do wrong?
