Christmas = Boxing Day

Cough and the Common Cold

Thank you to everyone who visited me yesterday.  I’m sorry I couldn’t return the favour – when I wasn’t unwrapping presents, cooking or eating, I was feeling ill and fighting with my family.

I was ill last week with a head cold, but the worst head cold I’ve ever had.  I’ve never been incapacitated by a cold before, but on Wednesday I was fit for nothing except lying on the couch and groaning intermittently.  In bed by seven, I had the best night’s sleep for a week, and felt much better on Thursday.  Friday I cleaned up a frenzy and Christmas Eve I was happily preparing for a great Christmas Day.

About six p.m., my throat felt a little sore.  By ten, I was aching all over.  I had a dreadful night: too hot, too cold, aching, coughing.  I was not alone: the Hub and Spud had equally bad nights.  Tory Boy has been working sixty-hour weeks and can’t see through his bloodshot eyes, and our house guest has issues of his own.

Yesterday was a bit of a blur for all of us.  I remember holding back tears over undercooked brussels sprouts and carrots, though the other seven vegetables were fine; the Hub and I almost came to blows over the wrong-sized roast potatoes; and the use of a camera to record the happy day was the subject of furious disagreement.  On the plus side, I made my best Yorkshire puddings yet, though they did look like those mushrooms that grow out of the sides of trees.

I went to bed for an hour after dinner, got up for Dr Who (we always watch it as a family), and then back to bed.  I slept to nine this morning – unheard of!  I feel a lot better although I’m coughing more.  Spud has gone to the sales with his brother and cousin, coughing all the way and spreading the Christmas germ.  The Hub woke me up to stop me snoring, so I assume he had another terrible night.

Never before did the word, Humbug!  have such meaning.  They really soothe my throat.

    Hello lovely Tilly,
So sorry you have been unwell, get well soon.
I read this post, from my mobile, to my little CAL. She has one of those chatimals it’s a hamster that repeats EVERYTHING!
So it was read slowly and repeated chipmunk style.
Enjoy your boxing day my friend.
Sending love and hugs to you and yours.
    Lisa. Xx 🙂

I am so sorry Linda that you and your family have been so poorly over Christmas. I do hope that you will all soon feel a lot better..
Fisherman’s Friend..that is my remedy for a sore throat. You eat one after the other and then I think that the germs get so fed up with the heat and the taste that they decide to go elsewhere…now this may sound daft.. and maybe that it is in my mind but it does seem to work.
Try those next time you get a little sore throat..don’t forget one after the other that is very important..not one now and then otherwise it will not work

Be cheerful my friend the New Year is ahead and we have lots to look forward to

Glad you’re feeling better today, Till.

We watched Doctor Who yesterday too, like you we do it as a family. As for the rest of your day, I’d say it mirrored many Christmasses in may houses.

And there is no right or wrong way to cook sprouts, they’re only there to remind us that Jesus suffered for us.

    Love the humbug joke.

Thank you, Mary. It did spoil the day a little, but there is always someone worse off, who perhaps didn’t have anyone to celebrate with at all. I was glad to have my family around me.

Tilly, eschew all the Christmas goodies except oranges and lemons and other Vitamin C-rich treats. Fisherman’s Friend – yes, if the throat isn’t too bad to put up with them: if it is, gargle with aspirin. Drink lots and lots of water. I’m so sorry your day was blighted, and wish you all a happy and bug-free new year.
    Love,
    ViV

I’m sorry that you had a sick Christmas, I had one once and it was awful, it is hard enough doing everything for Christmas when you are 100% but it is nightmarish when you are ill. Doctor Who is a good remedy however. Take care of yourself.

Maybe it is more than a cold? Did you have flu jabs?

The Hub did because he has a weak immune system. I don’t think it was flu, just a bad cold followed by a badder one.

So sorry to hear that illness brought down your Christmas. The advice to eat a lot of citrus is sound. But ’tis the season to get bad colds.
Hope you enjoy a healthy New Year’s.

I prescribe more maltesers, some cake and gallons of hot lemon. Or hot whiskey. Or cold wine.
    Sleep plenty.

I hope you will soon recover… and it’s too bad that you are having fights with your family at this particular moment of the year. Don’t worry the storm will end up going away sooner or later. 🙂 cheers!

I’m beginning to feel your pain. Can colds spread over the Internet? Mine came on like gangbusters last night, well several hours ago. Can’t sleep so here I am. No medicine in the house so I have to wait until daybreak to get so relief other than my herbal tea.

After I catch up on my blog reading, I’m going to catch up on my episodes of Doctor Who. I’m up to Season 4…

Hope you feel better… I spent Christmas quite sick myself… I had a nasty cold and 103 fever Xmas eve… I barely got out of bed to made Xmas dinner, but I had to as my kids were home and I had planned a nice meal… We moms are superwomen.
I’m slowly recovering but it has been a hard fall for me with repeated colds and hospital visits. Anyway, enough about me. I’m glad you are recovering. I also see that you changed that eye burning background template. 😆 This is much nicer. 🙂
    Cheers!

Sorry to hear you’ve been ill – and I’m not a bit surprised you still managed to make Christmas Dinner: it’s what we mums do!

      Hope you feel better soon.
